Ik zou de grafische omgeving opnieuw instellen door de bestaande configuratie te verwijderen.

Dit kan bijvoorbeeld door:

Ben eigenlijk best wel ten einde raad en vrees dat ik hier niet uit ga komen...ik vroeg me af of het normaal is na een verse install dat als je de 304 driver kiest dat er dan in de xorg.conf  file de 331.20 wordt aangegeven.

En zou het ook aan de kernel kunnen liggen dat die onlangs is geupdate?

Hoe ver ben je gekomen met het verwijderen van de xorg.conf?
Kan je wel gewoon in de herstel modus komen?
(Bij het opstarten direct de shift toets indrukken, kiezen voor herstel modus, grafische omgeving opnieuw instellen)

Zeker is dat bij gebruik van gesloten drivers zich af toe problemen voordoen.
Ik heb diverse keren gespeeld met andere kernels, andere gesloten drivers, schijven gewisseld tussen PC's etc.
Bij de open drivers gaat alles probleemloos, bij de gesloten drivers loopt er wel eens wat spaak.

Na verwijderen van bestaande configuratie wordt er automatisch een standaard open driver gebruikt.
(Bij het opstarten direct de shift toets indrukken, kiezen voor herstel modus, grafische omgeving opnieuw instellen)

Hierna kan je na het weer normaal opstarten door Ubuntu, na updates,  eventueel de aanbevolen gesloten driver installeren. Maar de Nouveau driver wordt ook steeds beter dus je kan er ook voor kiezen om het hierbij de houden. Als je medio april kan upgraden naar de 14.04 is de Nouveau driver weer een stuk beter ten opzichte van de 12.04 versie.

Je hebt nu de X11 verwijderd dus opnieuw  installeren of nieuw configureren.
In de links van ArjenDouma staat de oplossing met :

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

of als dat niet lukt:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg

Zuchtttt gedaan wat je zei en kreeg inderdaad een mooi log file van de desbetreffende driver in nvidia server settings maar helaas na het rijtje van pjotr gedaan te hebben valt hij weer terug op zwart.
Kreeg zelfs update van nvidia driver 173 en zag dat 331.20 driver aanbevolen is maar ik weet niet wat er aan de hand is maar het klopt niet helemaal.
