ik had dit antwoord al eens gegeven op een engels forum dus als je het niet erg vind is het even een copy paste:

Make a backup of your xorg.conf file by typing in terminal (in case something goes wrong):
# sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup [enter]
edit xorg.conf by entering in terminal:
# sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf [enter]
add this under "Device" settings in the screen that popped up:
Option "TwinView" "true"
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "Clone"
Option "TVOutFormat" "S-VIDEO" (or "COMPOSITE" if you don't use a Svideo cable)
Option "TVStandard" "PAL-B" (or "NTSC-M" if you live in the UK, USA etc.)
Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "30-50" (or "30-95" if your TV is 100hz capable)
Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "60"
Option "MetaModes" "1024x768,1024x768;800x600,800x600;640x480,640x480; 512x384,512x384"
...Save the file and close it.
Hit [CTRL]+[ALT]+[BACKSPACE] and login again.
You should see your Ubuntu running on monitor and TV now....

p.s. you can't run above 1024x768 if you want your TV up, so your desktop shouldn't be set higher.
more options to figure out what you need .. "PAL-B" or something else in case you need them:
PAL-B
Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Guinea, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland
PAL-G
Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland
PAL-H
Belgium

HD1080p

IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG YOU NEED TO PUT THE ORIGINAL XORG.CONF BACK :
# sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf
...enter your password.
Everything should be fixed to the point before you started to mess with your xorg.conf.
good luck..
