Het installeren van VMware geeft inderdaad problemen indien dit via Applications -> Add/remove software wordt gedaan. Er komt een melding over de i386 architectuur oid.
Ik heb dit opgelost door gebruik te maken van de Synaptic Package Manager:
- Ga naar System -> Administration -> Software Sources
- Op het tabje Ubuntu Software: Selecteer alles behalve Source code en verander download from naar ftp.tiscali.nl/ubuntu en sluit dit venster
- Ga vervolgens naar System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager en gebruik de search tool om vmware te zoeken.
- Selecteer "vmware server" en je krijgt een melding dat ook een aantal andere zaken geïnstalleerd moeten worden, klik ok
- Ga door met de installatie tot er gevraagd wordt om een serial key. Ga naar:
http://register.vmware.com/content/registration.html en vul het formulier in, dan krijg je een eigen key, vul deze in en rond de verdere installatie procedure af.
- Start Applications -> System Tools -> VMware server
- Selecteer connect to localhost, okay
- Selecteer create new virtual machine en have fun ;-)

Installing VMWARE does indeed cause problems using the standard Applications -> Add/remove software. Something about the i386 architecture.
I solved this by using the Synaptic Package Manager:
- Go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources
- On the Ubuntu Software Tab: Select everything except Source code and change download from to the nearest provider ( in my case ftp.tiscali.nl/ubuntu and close the form.
- Go to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager and use the search functionality to find VMware.
- Select "VMware server" and you will get a notification about neccesairy additional software packages , select okay.
- Continue the installation until a serial key is required. Go to
http://register.vmware.com/content/registration.html, fill out the form and receive your own key and continue the installation.
- Start Applications -> System Tools -> VMware server
- Select connect to localhost, okay
- Select create new virtual machine en have fun ;-)
