Probleem IPW 3945 : wireless button
Output in terminal :

roeler@roeler-laptop:~$ dmesg | grep ipw
[4294692.135000] ipw3945: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945 Network Connection driver for Linux, 1.0.0

force_series=97900

Citaat
Medion 97600
------------
First I tried a latest distribution, but the install wouldn't detect my
cd-rom drive. They all use 2.6 nowadays. Then I decided to use debian
with a 2.4 kernel, and the install succeeded. Unfortunately I had no DMA
and got messages about I/O and such.
My Medion uses a PATA harddisk over a SATA controller, and the SATA
controller is ICH6M....soo this wasn't correctly recognized by the
kernel 2.6. Then I found a patch for this and applied it to 2.6.17.2 and
then it was detecting my harddisk and dvd(writer)! Unfortunately only
half of that patch was going into 2.6.18, so that 2.6.18 was still
unusable to me! I gave the message that the whole patch worked for mine
too, so now they added it and it's in 2.6.19-rc5. Bottom line: you need
to compile 2.6.19-rc5 for Medion 97600. After that, it worked with DMA.
Don't forget: In 2.6 your HD is /dev/sda instead of /dev/hda like in
2.4, so don't forget to adapt this in menu.lst of grub. Otherwise there
were no problems upgrading to 2.6.
For the not so technical user I advise to wait for a distribution with
the 2.6.19 kernel in it.

For Xorg it is best to use the latest drivers to have 3D and accelerated
playback of your video's or Dvd's. Otherwise they are not synced with
the audio. I had to get the drivers from unstable, and therefore I used
apt pinning(but they are now in etch I guess). Also the fancy compiz
effects work on the 915GM

Then ACPI was working ok, suspend works, and I can see my battery status
in KDE.

Then I wanted wireless to work. The main problem is the hardware kill
switch for the wireless. You need a kernel driver to turn this on or
off. That driver is 'acerhk' and it's not in the main kernel. Because I
compiled my kernel myself, the headers are present and the source is in
/usr/src/linux and the acerhk compile automatically found it. I had to
change something to compile it with 2.6.19-rc5, so I can mail you that
source if you like. So just follow the instructions in their readme and
it compiles and you install it. Then you can add 'acerhk' as a new line
in /etc/modules to load it automatically on boot.

The acerhk driver also makes the extra P1,P2,P3 buttons work.
Unfortunately P3 didn't work. You can test this in X with 'xev'. So I
changed the acerhk driver and added 97600 as a model with the right
stuff to make P3 work. So now we get keycodes for P3 in 'xev'. The guy
on the acerhk website didn't respond so if anyone wants that modified
driver just mail me! To use those buttons, you need to look at the
keycodes in xev when you push the buttons. You can map those keycodes to
some key that X recognises using xmodmap. example: xmodmap -e "keycode
251 = F13" So I used the predefined X keys F13 through F35 to map the
special buttons on my laptop to keys that X programs(like KDE)
recognize. Then you assign shortcuts in KDE and you get the
functionality you desire. I put a script file with all those xmodmap
commands each in a line(first line is '#!/bin/sh') in the autostart
directory of my KDE, because I use KDE keyboard layouts.

In KDE it is then easy use the new keys, just define them in control
center to start whatever program you like.
There is a volume up and down there too, and I solved that by using dcop
in kde. In the menu editor you make a new entry which calls dcop and
changes the volume in KMix, so one for volume up and one for volume
down. Then you assign the volume_up script to the volume up keys and the
same with volume down. You can also program the mute key that way. In
the menu entry, you can specify multiple dcop calls with a ';'

If you need files or drivers or more info, just mail me...

Arvid Van Essche

Want medion is nogal goed vertegenwoordigd in linuxland.
