Opgelost: Dash-home en software centrum te zwaar voor mijn computer?

Als ik dash-home of het software centrum open dan trekt mijn computer het maar net. En soms helemaal niet dan loopt hij vast. In ieder geval gaat het erg langzaam/traag.

Vind ik erg vervelend  Is hier wat aan te doen? Zo ja... wat?

Ik gebruik geregeld Gimp en Inkscape met grote/zware bestanden en dit gaat altijd probleemloos

Het is 2e hands Dell (kantoor) computer  Echt onverwoestbaar.

het enige wat ik hier uit kan halen is dat het een Dell is met
een pentium D processor van 2,8 GHz.

Maar niets over geheugen, diskindeling, graphics etc.etc

geeft alle gegevens.

Bij 13.04 schijnt er een stuk optimalisatie te zijn uitgevoerd. Ik draai zelf 12.04 dus kan het niet controleren.

Aangezien je een Pentium D hebt denk ik dat het ram geheugen niet boven de 1 GB uit komt.
Klopt dit?

Je kan de Ubuntu 2D instelling proberen. Deze heeft minder zware grafische rompslomp.
Dit doe je door:
1. Uit te loggen
2. bij het logo rechtsboven de gebruikersnaam kiezen voor 'Ubuntu 2D'.
3. Weer inloggen.

Een andere optie is Xubuntu.
Xubuntu heeft de xfce interface die een stuk luchter is.

Dit gaat niet werken Erik, want 13.04 heeft standaard Unity 2D niet geïnstalleerd.

Ja en nee. Ten eerste zijn de 2D en 3D omgevingen binnen 13.04 samengevoegd. Dat wil dus zeggen dat je in 13.04 eigenlijk altijd een 3D omgeving krijgt, maar daar waar grafische kunstjes vertoond moeten worden (o.a. Dash), en de grafische kaart kan dat niet aan, dan wordt er teruggevallen op de CPU die al het werk moet doen. Dit kan dus zeer vertragend werken, zeker als je CPU niet te snel is.

De optimalisatie binnen 13.04 waarover gerept wordt. is er wel degelijk (ik draai op verschillende machines 13.04 en het verschil is goed merkbaar), maar daar heb je niets aan als je kaart geen 3D ondersteunt.

Remedie: kijk of je 3D bij je videokaart aangeslingerd kan krijgen. Eventueel uitwisselen van een kaart die (onder 13.04)  3D aankan. Of terugvallen naar 12.04 waar je een 2D-fallback hebt: wat voor videokaart je ook hebt, het draait altijd, zonder morren.

Software center is zwaar, zeker met starten.(dacht dat ze dit gingen optimalizeren, welke ubuntu weet ik niet?).
Dash maakt veel verbindingen, en veel zoek werk op de achtergrond/internet.

Installeer xubuntu, deze heeft geen dash, dus probleem van de dash is dan weg.
Software center is hetzelfde.
Alle software die je in ubuntu kunt installeren kun je ook in xubuntu installeren.
Xubuntu is lichter , reageert sneller.
Zelf heb ik een i7 920 met 6 GB, en draai xubuntu, lekker snel.

En als je een pc koopt, maak een lijst met je hardware, en niet een lange print waar je 10 minuten moet gaan lezen om te kijken wat voor hardware je hebt, terwijl jij dat zelf zou moet uitzoeken. En 10 minuten gaan lezen doe ik niet met zo een file.
Dus maak een lijst,
cpu
moederbord
videokaart/ en of deze onboard is
geheugen, hoeveel dus
voeding/en hier ook merk vermelden(dit is het belangrijkste van je hele pc)
Andere hardware

En zoals je ziet is zo een lange lijst niet nodig.
En vaak is deze info nodig om vragen te beantwoorden, dus altijd meegeven is vaak handig.

Jan, dit kan ik beamen. Ik heb sinds 2 dagen de Xubuntu shell over mijn Ubuntu 13.04 gezet en het draait inderdaad een heel stuk fijner (zie topic wat ik eerder aangaf met een soortgelijke uitdaging).

software centrum loopt bij mij ook regelmatig vast, zelfs met specs van 'tegenwoordig' ( amd a8-4500 & 8gb ram) maar ook op elke andere pc in mijn omgeving, dus als je het mij vraagt is software centrum gewoon een en all onstabiel.

Deze machine gaat voor Ubuntu nog mee tot april 2017, mits.........
maximaal 12.04.1 LTS
Daarna loop je risico met te nieuwe xorg, video drivers, kernel en voor jouw video te zware desktop.
In 12.04.1 wordt je weliswaar ge-update naar 12.04.2(en verder) maar blijft video in tact.
Voor een snellere desktop afhandeling kun je de 2D omgeving of (versie gelijkwaardige) LXDE of XFCE kiezen. (Lubuntu/Xubuntu)
Zelfs mijn 3 jaar oude Vaio portable geeft het met ingang van 12.04.2, qua video driver, op in 3D.
Dus al is de 13 versie beter geoptimaliseerd, zoniet voor oudere PC dozen en draagbakjes.

Mijn ervaring... 2 centen, doe er mee wat u goeddunkt.

Ik heb totaal geen verstand van hardware maar zoals ik het nu begrijp is mijn huidige Ubuntu 12.04 installatie te zwaar voor mijn computer. Toch?

Een nieuwe installatie van Xubuntu ga ik vanwege tijdgebrek nog eventjes uit de weg. Maar wie weet

Ook een overweging waard al neig ik zelf naar een schone installatie. 

Even een ´noob´ vraag    als ik kies om Xubuntu over mijn huidige OS te zetten ben ik dan ook al mijn programma´s kwijt? Ik gebruik ook nog Virtualbox met allerlei  Windows programma´s daarin. Alles op nieuw installeren kost dan wel erg veel tijd.

De VirtualBox images, de .vdi files, kun je copieeren, na installatie terugzetten en weer aan VB koppelen.

Xubuntu kun je gewoon erbij zetten.
Dan bij boot, waar je inlogd, daar kun je kiezen voor xubuntu.

Je kunt dezelfde programma's blijven gebruiken.

Als ik tijd heb dan ga ik Xubuntu installeren. Ik vind het wel tricky want ik heb een webshop. Dus ik maak liever geen rare/onvoorziene fouten.

In eerste instantie wil ik nog even kijken hoe het gaat als ik 3D-effecten uitschakel. Inmiddels wel de nodige bestanden verwijderd,  prullenpak geleegd, bestanden die ik niet gebruik maar wel wil bewaren gezipt. Computer reageert een stuk sneller. 

Een nieuwe installatie duurt een klein half uurtje.

Het uitzoeken/inlezen over hoe ik een installatie doe, welk systeem ik moet kiezen kost de meeste tijd.

PS. Net nog even  een Windows XP virtual machine verwijderd en een nieuwe installatie gedaan. Duurt niet zo heel lang hoor maar langer dan 30 minuten.
