Probleem met pakketbeheersysteem

Hallo allemaal,

Daar ben ik weer.    
Eergisteren heb ik Ubuntu 7.10 weer geinstalleerd, maar ik loop tegen een paar problemen aan.
Vanmiddag probeerde ik een .wmv bestand aan de praat te krijgen, ik heb wat codecs geprobeerd te installeren, maar dat ging niet helemaal goed...
Ik kan middels add/remove niets meer installeren, ik krijg de melding;

Controleren van geïnstalleerde en beschikbare software is mislukt
Dit is een zeer ernstige fout in uw pakketbeheersysteem. Controleer met synaptic op gebroken pakketten, controleer de toegangsrechten en correctheid van het bestand  '/etc/apt/sources.list' en herlaad de pakketinformatie met 'sudo apt-get update' en 'sudo apt-get install -f'.

Als ik synaptic packet manager probeer op te starten, krijg ik de volgende foutmelding;

E: Type 'E: Kan de lijst van bronnen niet inlezen.
Ga naar de broninstellingen om het probleem te verhelpen.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Als ik vanuit de terminal sudo apt-get install -f   of  sudo apt-get update ingeef krijg ik deze foutmelding;

E: Type 'E: De lijst van bronnen kon niet gelezen worden.

Het is me duidelijk dat ik iets fout heb gedaan, maar wat begrijp ik niet...
Ik ben vanmiddag gaan Googlen, en heb dit forum ook uitgebreid doorgenomen, maar heb geen echte oplossing gevonden.
Heeft iemand enig idee wat er aan de hand is?
Mijn naam is trouwens MrNewbie, omdat ik momenteel  een Newbie ben, ik heb in de afgelopen week een beknopt e-book gelezen over Ubuntu...

welke versie van ubuntu gebruikt ge? want ge hebt de medibuntu repo van edgy in sources.list...

Hij schrijft bovenaan de 7.10 ?.

Kijk eens in dit draadje.  Verwijder eerst wat ik daar uitleg en volg vooral de uitstekende uitleg van Pjotr.

Bedankt  voor je reactie Nunslaughter, ik gebruik Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
Ik denk dat ik codecs heb geprobeerd te installeren die voor Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) zijn bedoeld.
Wat kan ik er het beste mee doen?
Opzich zou het geen ramp zijn als ik Ubuntu opnieuw moet installeren, maar ik los het liever gewoon op als dat kan.

Ik heb het opgelost,  sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/edgy-medibuntu.list
edgy-medibuntu.list is nu leeg, en ik kan alles weer gewoon gebruiken.
