Ok, I have read through kernel boot messages (took out quiet and splash), I see the followning

So this is why I have to reboot the modem each time. As this is highly annoying, any ideas how to fix the MAC thingie? I googled and found bug reports about it so
Any ideas are more than welcome! The network adapter is an nvidia MCP95
