Ik heb een soortgelijk probleem gehad, ook op een oude bak. Een liggend streepje, en voor de rest: nada. Na x pogingen dan maar geprobeerd te upgraden (doe ik liever niet, maja). Is zonder problemen gelukt....

Ik heb er dus ook helaas last van toen ik het via upgraden deed, aangezien dat het eerste was wat ik probeerde, doordat dat via de update manager ging.
Laat hier eens de output zien in de Terminal vansudo blkid
En plaats je fstab file uit de /etc folder hier eens.

Voor de duidelijkheid de gegevens die hier gegeven zijn, zijn vanaf de 9.10 partitie. 10.04 werkt nog steeds niet, ik heb ook nog lubuntu 10.04 geprobeerd, maar dat werkte eveneens niet.
