kan je de inhoud van /boot/grub/menu.lst hier eens posten (gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst) tesamen met de output van "sudo fdisk -l"

welke netwerkkaart heb je precies (dan heb ik het over de chipset) dat je hiervoor de kernel moet hercompileren vind ik namelijk wel vreemd
"lspci|grep Ethernet"

heb je geen gedit ? Achja, misschien komt dat omdat je Kubuntu hebt, probeer dan dit:

kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst
of
kate /boot/grub/menu.lst
of anders gewoon via de terminal zelf:
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

aha, acx111 heeft een firmwareprobleempje in Dapper, maar dit is makkelijk op te lossen... ik zal die info wel eens zoeken nadat je de standaard kernel terug hebt ge

Kedit bestaat wel, het zit alleen niet standaard bij ubuntu,
bij debian en archlinux heb ik bijvoorbeeld kedit

Normaal gezien zou er dan een venster moeten verschijnen waarin er tekst staat, die had ik nodig.
Maar via de console kan het anders ook wel, gewoon:
"cat /boot/grub/menu.lst"
dat is wellicht makkelijker/sneller

Beste Profox en andere behulpzame mensen

heb in de nano in het bestand /boot/grub/menu.lst een aantal commentaren verwijderd.
Het probleem is nu dat ik bij de herstart in de GRUB nog enkel Windows zie.
Ik had dus bij Windows alle # verwijderd.
Ubuntu krijg ik niet meer te zien als keuze en dat vind ik ontzettend jammer :/

Kleine correctie nog : bij mijn allereerste vraag schreef ik dat de kernel gehercompileerd is. Dat klopt niet. Mijn vriend had een module toegevoegd om het netwerk aan de praat te krijgen

ff verduidelijken, (ik ben trouwens die vriend van alain1)

ik heb eerst manueel een nieuwe acx module gecompileerd, en een werkende firmware  via hotplug geinstalleerd.

blijkbaar is bij een upgrade toch een nieuwe kernel geinstalleerd (hoewel ik dat uitgevinkt had), en is er een nieuwe grub geinstalleerd (waardoor de windowslink verdwenen is)

dit was de menu.lst na de upgrade

Blijkt nu dat enkel windows nog herkent wordt...

ik ben geen grub specialist (blijf lilo voorstander), dus kan iemand eens uitleggen hoe je via de grub command mode die linux weer tevoorschijn laat halen (en wat je moet aanpassen in menu.lst om alles weer te laten herkennen)

Sorry hoor maar ik ben niet mee met de zaak... newbie, weet je wel.... :O
Ik stop de CD in de lade en start opnieuw op... Waar kan ik dan het commando boot : rescue intikken?  Ik krijg een menu te zien en onderaan kan ik kiezen voor boot from harddisk.
Is het daar dat ik ergens in een soort terminal moet zien te raken?
Ik weet wel dat als ik de GRUB zie en C duw dat ik in een Terminal kom. Of is het daar dat ik het moet intikken?

Je bent je systeem meer en meer naar de zak aan het helpen met die grub aan te passen en kernels te forceren enzo ;)

Wat geeft "cat /boot/grub/menu.lst" op dit moment als output?
En "uname -r" ?
En werkt windows vanuit grub ?

Dan zal ik wel een juiste menu.lst voor je samenstellen
en daarna zullen we ons bezighouden met het draadloze netwerk

steek de kubuntu desktop cd in de computer,
start de live omgeving op (standaardoptie, gewoon enter drukken, eventueel eerst nog toetsenbord/taal aanpassen met behulp van de F-knoppen)

open een terminal (konsole) in kubuntu en typ:
sudo grub-install /dev/hda

reboot de computer

edit: als er iets raar zou gebeuren waardoor je ineens ook niet meer windows kan booten, kan het handig zijn om een windows cd in de buurt te hebben, daarmee recovery console opstarten en dan "fixmbr" typen, dan werkt windows in ieder geval weer..

edit 2: misschien is het beter om je menu.lst uit te lezen en nadien aan te passen via de live cd... hier ga ik wel verder op in als de eerste methode niet lukte (grub-install /dev/hda)

Kijk he, we zullen het anders oplossen, probeer dit eens in de live cd:
sudo mkdir /media/linux
sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/hda6 /media/linux
sudo kwrite /media/linux/boot/grub/menu.lst
(kwrite of kate of whatever teksteditor werkt)

en plak dit in het tekstbestand en dan opslaan:

Eerst en vooral vind ik het heel erg vervelend dat ik jou constant moet storen met mijn vervelende en waarschijnlijk domme vragen. Je moet echter weten dat ik jouw hulp en vooral jouw geduld heel erg waardeer !

Trouwens, ik ben het die verkeerd bezig is..
Ik geef je soms te weinig informatie omdat ik verwacht dat alles wel vanzelf zal gaan, maar de live cd is blijkbaar niet zo flexibel als een gewone installatie..

Ik hoop dat je niet elke keer moet herstarten om deze dingetjes te proberen :)
maar het zou wel kunnen helpen om "xhost +" uit te voeren voordat je kwrite opstart. Voor zover ik weet kan je als root (met sudo) kwrite niet starten omdat je geen toegang krijgt tot X, met xhost + wordt access control voor X uitgeschakeld.

sudo mkdir /media/linux
sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/hda6 /media/linux
xhost +
sudo kwrite /media/linux/boot/grub/menu.lst

Als het toch niet werkt, dan doe je:
sudo nano /media/linux/boot/grub/menu.lst

en dan krijg je een teksteditor in de console, je moet gewoon de tekst die ik eerder gaf plakken in dit bestand (rechtermuisknop -> plakken of shift+insert) en dan CTRL+X en J of Y om op te slaan

PS: je moet dan wel die tekst ergens bij de hand hebben, op een diskette/usb waartoe je toegang hebt vanuit de live cd...
als dit niet het geval is, dan kunnen we nog iets anders proberen, en dat is om de oude menu.lst terug te halen, het kan zijn dat je vorige menu.lst gebackupped is als "menu.lst~"
Probeer dan dit:

sudo mkdir /media/linux
sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/hda6 /media/linux
sudo mv /media/linux/boot/grub/menu.lst /media/linux/boot/grub/menu.lst.broken
sudo mv /media/linux/boot/grub/menu.lst~ /media/linux/boot/grub/menu.lst

ik ga het proberen in nano. Bedoel je met de tekst plakken dat ik de commando's moet ingeven in nano? (de sudo commando's bedoel ik...)
