resolutie niet hoger dan 1024*768?

hallo

sinds vanochtend werk ik met een dual boot tussen ubuntu en xp
maar met ubuntu kan ik de resolutie niet hoger zetten dan 1024*768 terwijl ik 1280*1024 nodig heb
moet ik nog drivers instaleren?
mijn grafische kaart is een nvidia G-Force 7600+

feisty: beperkt ondersteunde stuurprogramma's (systeem: beheer)=>reboot
daarna: (sudo) nvidia-settings in de terminal en de resolutie aanpassen.

ik ben nogal een leek, dus even wat uitgebreider uitlegen svp
pc heb ik al meerdere malen reboot om te switchen tussen xp en ubuntu
wat ik daarna moet doen snap ik niet, graag uitleg

Als je Feisty hebt:

Naar Systeem -> Beheer -> Beperkt Ondersteunde stuurprogramma's
daar de Nvidia driver installeren en daarna de pc opnieuwe opstarten

na de herstart:

Hulpmiddelen -> Terminalvenster

in de terminal typ je "sudo nvidia-settings" (zonder "")

en dan kies je daar je resolutie :)

hij wil de driver niet enable-en :S
heb ff een screen gemaakt:

als je dan op enable drukt zou je verwachten dat hij dan ge-enabled is, maar dat is niet zo er gebeurt gewoon niks...

bij mij gebeurde er wel wat, ik had  daarna geen driver en geen X meer, heeft me een dag gekost met rommelen in rescue mode om weer beeld te krijgen. Heb nu het probleem (nvidia geforce 4 ) dat ik steeds zwarte vensters krijg (kompleet willekeurig) als ik dan van resolutie wissel heb ik weer beeld, ook als ik dan weer naar 1240 terug ga. Heel raar, is sinds feisty.

Heb ik gedaan van alles geprobeerd blijft een drama (ben niet de enige begrijp ik ), ubuntu krijgt XP trekjes, ik wil edgy terug :-(, helaas zal downgraden wel moeilijker zijn als upgraden. Is Kubuntu een optie ?

Niet te gauw opgeven, Fred, ik denk dat we er wel uitkomen. Zoek eens op (handleiding, technische specificaties) wat de volgende twee waarden van je monitor zijn: Horizontal Sync (HorizSync) en Vertical Refresh (VertRefresh). Post die dan eens hier, samen met de volledige inhoud van je xorg.conf  
Die staat in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Dit is de Xorg: Ik heb net de howto:latest nvidia drivers gevolgd en nu lijkt het beter te gaan. Maar de nvidia-settings verschijnt niet in mijn toepassingen/systeem menu zoals zou moeten (daar gaf ik applications;system op, is dat de reden ?)
De gegevens van mijn laptopmonitor kan ik niet bij de papieren vinden. Ergens op een forum vond ik voor een R3000 dat dat 1280x1024 moet zijn en
Horizontaal 30-82
Vertikaal 56-76
Maar ik weet niet of er verschillen tussen die compaqs presarios zijn of dat alle R3000 gelijk zijn.

Mooi! Hier is-ie dan. Wat heb ik gedaan:
- juiste waarden ingevoerd voor horiz en vert
- dynamic twinview uitgeschakeld
- toetsenbord gezet op US international, zodat je trema's kunt typen: ë ö ä

Doe nu dit:
In terminal: sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Wis de volledige tekst en vervang die door de onderstaande tekst (zonder het woordje code). Daarna opslaan, sluiten en herstarten.

Heel erg bedankt, het werkt nu volgens mij weer als vanouds. Veel beter beeld nu en sneller. Is de hele avond niet meer de fout in gegaan. Super.
