HELP Needed With UPC + Ubuntu
« Gepost op: 2008/02/10, 15:14:40 »
Hello,
First of all please forgive me for using the English language but as I have recently moved here, I do not speak Dutch (yet :) )
When I install Linux (so far I have tried Ubuntu, Mint and Debian), I cannot get it to DHCP to my UPC Arris modem.

The modem is working fine on windows and since I am connecting using Ethernet it is not a driver issue.

I have tried rebooting the modem after installing linux, no luck.
I believe it is a peculiarity of UPC so please since it is a Dutch ISP I think it is better to ask the question here. So regarding this issue anyone has any ideas?
Changing ISPs for the time being is not an option :)
Unfortunately, UPC does not support Linux  (as far as I was able to deduct using a dictionary from their page)

Bedankt!

I don't write Englisch very well, I hope you will understand.
First of all, if you used Windows, before shutdown/reboot, start cmd in that window fill in ipconfig /release , attention see the space between ipconfig and /release, now you can reboot to Ubuntu. Look in Ubuntu for System-->Adminisration--> Networking flotting modus(I hope it's the correct word).
I had the exectly problem, i have UPC as provider to.

White kind regards,

Gijs

Unfortunately it is.
When I reboot to/from linux, reboot is required.

UPC sucks, when this contract is over, ill get a new ISP.

Well, no probs here with UPC , and I have dual-boot Windows/ Ubuntu.
Both are connecting fine! So I think you don't have to blame UPC for that.
Better blame 'm for malfunctioning mailservers . :D But that's another story.

Zo , mijn engels ook weer geoefend!:)

isn't upc taken over by telenet?

well anyway, i don't know that much about networking etc, but isn't it a solution to just buy a router? then you get the ip from your router, not the modem...

You have the Arris cable modem as well?
If I do not have to blame UPC then what? Btw when I reboot to Vista after Ubuntu I still have to do the same chore (reset network card, reset modem, wait a bit etc). This is inconvinient, don't you agree?

@nunslaughter: Why should I have to pay 80e more for a decent router? :( (Cool nick btw, I used to hear this band as well :) )

BUT since this POS (not Point Of Sale :) ) is not doing NAT/Firewalling then perhaps it is a valid reason...

A router is the easiest solution. You can get a cheap router for 30€ or less and it should work.

.
Pretty much so. I don't have the Arris modem, but I still think it's strange that you have to reset all the time.

As you might know UPC does register your MAC-adress as a "valid customer", so if you switch your networkcard(thus your MAC-address) , you have to reregister/ reboot/reset

That's the only time I have to renew the dhcp-lease(edit:manually. Each reboot/restart renews the dhcp lease), actually.

As long it's the  same network-interface,  rebooting from/to Ubuntu shouldn't be a problem .

If you put in the Live-CD , do you get an valid IP-address?

Anyway, obtaining an dhcp-lease has nothing to do what kind of OS you're running. The dhcp-server doesn't give a hoot about that. If you get an dhcp-lease in Vista then you should get one just as easily in Ubuntu. Or OS10. Or whathaveyou.

/*******************************
NEW PROBLEM IDENTIFIED - PLEASE READ BELOW
********************************/
Ok, I have read through kernel boot messages (took out quiet and splash), I see the followning
[    0.608000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LMAC] (IRQs 20) *10
[    1.700000] input: Macintosh mouse button emulation as /class/input/input0
[    2.524000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LMAC] enabled at IRQ 20
[    2.524000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:06.0[A] -> Link [LMAC] -> GSI 20 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
[    2.524000] 0000:00:06.0: Invalid Mac address detected: fd:4a:bb:24:1b:00
[    2.524000] Please complain to your hardware vendor. Switching to a random MAC.
So this is why I have to reboot the modem each time. As this is highly annoying, any ideas how to fix the MAC thingie? I googled and found bug reports about it so :( Any ideas are more than welcome! The network adapter is an nvidia MCP95

Buy a router, that's the easiest solution and I'm sure it will solve your problem.

You could also try to change a configuration file to change the mac address: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/change-your-network-card-mac-address-on-ubuntu/
But I'm not sure if it works with your hardware.
